British ex-policeman jailed 10 months for selling information to Murdoch’s Sun tabloid

LONDON – A former police officer has been jailed in Britain for selling information to Rupert Murdoch’s Sun newspaper.
Alan Tierney, who formerly worked at Surrey Police, was sentenced to 10 months in prison Tuesday for selling details of arrests including a case involving Rolling Stone guitarist Ronnie Wood.
He earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of misconduct.
Judge Adrian Fulford said Tierney’s offences were a “disgraceful way for a police officer to act.”
The policeman was arrested as part of the Operation Elveden investigation into allegations that newspapers were paying police and other officials for information.
The inquiry is connected to the scandal of reporters listening to voicemail messages left for celebrities, crime victims, politicians and others. The wrongdoing led to the closure of Murdoch’s News of the World tabloid.
