RCMP called to investigate by social media platform in child exploitation case

Officers from the provincial internet child exploitation unit were alerted by a social media company that child sexual abuse material was being transmitted through its platform.

The RCMP were contacted in April. Following an investigation, police were led to a 67-year-old man in Pictou County. They executed a search warrant at a residence on Glen Road East in Central Caribou, where they found electronic devices and guns.

As a result, Steven Frederick Nelson is facing several charges including:

  • Possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material (two counts)
  • Transmitting child Sexual abuse and exploitation material
  • Unlicensed possession of a firearm
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm

Investigators believe that there could be more victims — now adults — who may have been targeted by the accused several years ago. Police are asking anyone who believes they may have been a victim of Nelson’s to call police.

“There’s no time limit on reporting sexual offences. The Nova Scotia RCMP recognizes the lasting impact these crimes can have on victims, regardless of how much time has passed,” the press release notes.
