Hate-motivated charges laid after man threatens youth in Middle Sackville

A youth told police they were being followed and when they got into a vehicle in Middle Sackville things escalated.

RCMP were called to Midnight Run near Highway 101 in the community on Sept. 16. The youth was in the passenger side of a parked vehicle when the man tried to remove them from the car, the release details.

When the driver sped away, the man followed in his own vehicle, “driving dangerously while continuing to make threats toward the youth,” police said.

Investigators determined the man’s actions were hate-motivated and laid several offences against him. He was arrested at the Lower Sackville detachment two days later.

Matthew Michael Jones, 21, of Halifax, is charged with:

  • Uttering threats (three counts)
  • Dangerous operation of a conveyance
  • Criminal harassment

The accused appeared in court and was released on conditions. He’s expected to appear in court again on Oct. 22.

“Nova Scotians are asked to report behaviour that appears motivated by bias or prejudice to their nearest RCMP detachment or local police,” the RCMP said. “Speaking up helps protect the well-being of everyone in the community.”
