Missing man found dead following extensive search and rescue operation

Several streets and an off-leash dog park were closed to people on Thursday morning in a Halifax neighbourhood for a search and rescue operation.

Halifax Regional Police said that they were continuing to work with search and rescue teams in Mainland Commons Park, on Westridge Drive in relation to an ongoing investigation.

On Wednesday evening, police released information about a 78-year-old man, who had been missing since Sept. 19.

At around 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, officers found his red Buick Encore parked on Westridege Drive. This prompted an “extensive” search of the area.

Officers shared an update just after 1:00 p.m. on Thursday to say searchers found the man dead.

“Police extend their condolences to the man’s family, friends and loved ones,” the release notes.

The man’s death is not believed to be suspicious.
