The multi-million dollar Larry Uteck Interchange on Highway 102 is just about finished. The job began in the summer of 2009 and could finally wrap up by the end of this week.
The new interchange features three roundabouts and will open traffic between the 102 and the Bedford Highway.
Bedford Councilor Tim Outhit says he hopes it won’t increase traffic on connector streets. “Obviously we’re going to keep an eye on things, overall it’s a good news story,” he says, “but sometimes there can be some growing pains.”
That sentiment is echoed by HRM’s Traffic Planning Director Dave McCusker. He says traffic flow isn’t expected to increase much on Larry Uteck Blvd either.
“Our expectation is traffic from the area will either go up the hill to the 102 or down the hill to the Bedford Highway. Those two run parallel to each other,” he says, “there’s not really an expectation that there’s that much traffic that wants to go between the two of them.”
A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for Friday.
