Atlantic mayors talk wastewater

SAINT JOHN – The Atlantic Mayors Congress is calling on the Harper government to use its 2011 budget to spell out plans for funding the proposed changes to wastewater regulations.

AMC Chair Peter Kelly of Halifax says the regulations could cost Atlantic Canadian municipalities and taxpayers more than two billion dollars.

Kelly says the mayors understand the importance of wastewater treatment, but can’t shoulder the financial burden alone.

Saint John Mayor Ivan Court says the Port City is closer to meeting the new regulations than other communities, but the cost for upgrades would still be in the millions of dollars.
