Now that the province’s Auditor General has announced he is stepping down, he is reflecting on his eight years in office.
Jacques Lapointe will leave his position in January with two years left in his 10 year mandate.
“I will be 67 years old when I retire so I finally decided that is old enough,” said Lapointe.
Lapointe says finding the discrepancies in expense reports that led to charges being filed against four Members of the Legislative Assembly is by far his biggest accomplishment while in office.
“I think that it is important that people have trust in the operations of their government,” said Lapointe of the spending scandal. “And now I think they can.”
As for frustrations from his time on the job, Lapointe says governments failing to act quickly on his recommendations was troublesome for him.
“Sometimes they do act on them, but I guess I’m just an impatient guy,” said Lapointe.
Lapointe will remain in office until January 31.
