Cancellations begin as blizzard sets sights on Maritimes

The wild winter continues today and tomorrow in the Maritimes with a blizzard warning in effect for much of the region.
The snow will start falling tonight and could create a lot of problems for tomorrow morning’s commute.
It’s not quite ‘Snowmageddon’, but meteorologist Richard Zurawski says all in, we’ll see 30 to 35 centimetres of snow.
“What’s going to come with this is the wind,” he says. “We’re looking at blowing and drifting snow because this low pressure system has winds associated with it and winds will be gusting to 60km/h so you’re looking at frequent whiteouts.”
He says the snow will really start to come down after midnight, with twelve hours of snow in total.
“Late tonight we’re going to get some flurries, then after midnight the significant snowfall starts and that will continue through most of Wednesday,” he explains. “It’ll taper off tomorrow afternoon sometime and then you’re looking at clearing skies.”
Zurawski adds it will stay cold through Thursday but by Friday the temperatures will spike again, and that will lead to another melt heading into the weekend.

- Halifax Stanfield International Airport says delays are being posted. See flyhalifax.com
- Halifax Divorce Session, scheduled for Wed. January 22nd, has been CANCELLED
- Clothing bank at Dartmouth First Church of the Nazarene will be closed Wednesday
- Bernie’s Shuttle Service has cancelled all shuttles from Yarmouth to the HRM and all shuttles from the HRM returning to Yarmouth
- Curbside collection of garbage, organics, and recyclables is cancelled for Wed. Jan. 22, and will be re-scheduled for this Saturday, Jan. 25.
- Canada Post says the blizzard may impede mail delivery
