A scary start to the day for 500 staff and students at the Cobequid Educational Centre in Truro this morning after a fire broke out in an elevator shaft at around 8:00 a.m.
School board spokesperson Debbie Buott-Matheson told News 95.7 the fire alarm and sprinkler system went off and the school was evacuated.
“I think folks were shaken up, no one was hurt. The students and the staff in the building followed their evacuation plan and they moved next store to the Legion Stadium, that’s their evacuation point,” explained Buott-Matheson.
Buott-Matheson said the school will remain closed for the rest of the day.
There was a lot of smoke and water in the building and it’s too early to know if classes will also be cancelled tomorrow.
Investigators are on the scene trying to determine the cause.
