Police warn residents of new extortion scam in HRM

Regional police are warning residents about a new extortion scam making the rounds in HRM.
Police say they've received multiple reports where scammers call or text victims, accusing them of attempting to use an escort service and demand payment.
The scammers then claim to be members of a “cartel” and send graphic photos depicting violence.
According to police, they threaten to harm the victim or their loved ones if they do not respond or deliver the money.
Police believe the scammers randomly contact people, and the targeted people have not necessarily been in touch with an escort service.
HRP advises anyone who receives a similar call or text not to respond or provide any money or personal information, block the number and avoid opening unsolicited text messages from unknown numbers.
People are asked to contact the police to file a report if they are concerned for their safety or lost money because of this scam.
People can also report a scam where they haven't been a victim to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
