2019 in review: Halifax hosts the Memorial Cup

By CityNews Halifax Staff

As the end of 2019 draws near, HalifaxToday.ca looks back on our most memorable stories of the year:

The Mastercard Memorial Cup was played in Halifax in May.

Halifax beat out Moncton for the honour of hosting the Canadian Hockey League championship tournament in 2019, at the end of the team's 25th season.

The hosting committee aimed for the best Memorial Cup ever staged, both on and off the ice.

A fan zone was set up inside the convention centre, with Hockey Hall of Fame exhibits and family-friendly games.

Argyle was shut down to host a Street Fest featuring nearly 20 Nova Scotian musical acts, including The Trews, Joel Plaskett Emergency, Matt Mays, Ria Mae, Adam Baldwin and Sloan, along with a special performance by Canadian country music star Gord Bamford.

The round-robin tournament featured the host Halifax Mooseheads competing against the President Cup-winning Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, the OHL champion Guelph Storm, and the Prince Albert Raiders from the WHL.

The Mooseheads made it to the final, in a game that was a rematch of the QMJHL championship.

However, after 60 minutes on the ice, the Herd saw their dream of a Memorial Cup come to an end as they fell 4-2 against the Huskies.

“It's hard, but I'm so proud of this team. It was an honour to be captain,” said the Mooseheads Antoine Morand.

“I'm going to be a mess for a couple of days, but at the end of this day everybody on this team can hold their head up. They were incredible. We went through so much adversity, we fell down so many times but we always got back up.”
