Alderney Ferry service reductions extended

By Meghan Groff

Temporary service reductions on the Alderney Ferry are being extended.

Since Monday, August 29, the ferry has only been running every half hour on weekdays starting at 2 p.m.

When originally announced by Halifax Regional Municipality, it said the disruption was expected to last a minimum of two weeks.

HRM is confirming the reductions will now be in place until further notice due to current staff availability.

The Alderney Ferry usually runs every 15 minutes for most of the day until 8 p.m. before switching to 30 minute service for the rest of the night.

There's still 15 minute service between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The Woodside Ferry will continue running on its regular weekday schedule.

Lack of staffing also continues to impact several bus routes.

“The cancellation of some bus trips, as well as the reduced ferry service is done to provide more certainty to passengers and allow them to plan in light of the current staffing issues,” said Halifax Regional Municipality in a news release.

HRM is running recruitment campaign to try and hire more bus operators and ferry crew.
