Darrell Samson re-elected in Sackville-Preston-Chezzetcook

Liberal incumbent Darrell Samson has been re-elected in Sackville-Preston-Chezzetcook.

Samson was first elected MP of the riding when the Liberals swept Atlantic Canada in 2015, beating out long term MP Peter Stoffer.

Stoffer had been an MP since 1997, and Samson says his long run was an indication that voters supported Stoffer, but not necessarily the NDP.

“This riding is special because they really look closely at who is their representative and what is their representative doing for them,” he said at his victory party. “If that representative is a strong advocate for what they are looking for and what they need, then they appreciate that.”

He says his election night win is a sign his constituents value the hard work of the Liberal Party, and their investment into the community.

“We were able to bring many, many infrastructure projects that had been a long time waiting,” Samson told reporters. “You talk about the Sackville-Burnside Expressway, 28 years. You talk about the water in Fall River, 10 years. You talk about the canoe club in Lower Sackville, over 10 years. Many, many projects that were never were able to get off the ground, and we were able to get those going quickly.”

As of 1:30 a.m. with 195 of 196 polls reporting, Samson has 40.39 per cent of the vote with 19,667 votes.

The NDP's Matt Stickland has 11,665, the Conservative's Kevin Copley has 10,970, the Green Party's Anthony Edmonds has 5,590 and People's Party of Canada's Sybil Hogg has 801.
