Fatal house fire deemed ‘not suspicious’ by RCMP

A preliminary investigation by RCMP has determined a fatal house fire in Pubnico Head is, at this time, not suspicious.

Investigators are still working to find exact cause of the blaze.

Councillor Kathy Bourque, whose district includes Pubnico Head, says the tragedy has sparked an outpouring of grief. 

“Everyone is reacting the same way,” she says. “Everyone is heartbroken and in shock.”

She says particularly in a small community, such a tragedy is devastating because it is tight-knit and “like family.” 

Warden of the neighbouring municipality of Yarmouth, Leland Anthony, says the grandfather of some of the children who died, is a well-known fisherman in the region. 

“Even though we are a sister community to Pubnico and Argyle, everyone knows everyone and it is quite devastating,” he says. 

The fire completely destroyed the rural home and killed four people, including at least two young children.

RCMP Cpl. Jennifer Clarke says they're offering support and condolences to the community and to their own employees who have been affected by the loss.

“This is an absolute tragedy and the RCMP extends our sincerest condolences to the family members of the victims and to the community of Yarmouth,” she said. “There are no words to express this type of devastation.”

The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner's Service has taken over the lead of the investigation, while Mounties continue to assist and provide resources.

A man rescued from the home remains in hospital in critical condition.
