Guided tours of McNabs Island start next weekend

By Meghan Groff

The Friends of McNabs Island Society will be giving guided tours of the historic provincial park starting weekend.

Tours will go every Sunday throughout July and August.

“Learn why the island was important to the Mi'kmaw First Nations, the early French settlers, and the British, who built several forts on the island to protect the Port of Halifax,” said a news release from the group.

“Discover where Bill Lynch, the Midway King, got his start in the fairground business. Visit the Victorian Gardens and the ruins of the A.J. Davis Soda Pop Factory.”

Those who book are asked to dress for the weather and wear sturdy sneakers or hiking boots. Sunscreen, hats, bug spray, lunch and plenty of drinking water are all highly recommended.

“The island's trails are rough in some places because storm surges have washed rocks up onto the trail,” said Friends of McNabs Island. “Visitors should expect to walk at least 5 km on this hike.”

Dogs are allowed as long as they're on a leash, but smoking and drinking alcohol are prohibited.

Tours are $25 for non-members. A&M Sea Charters will be providing transportation for the two tours per day, leaving for the island from Fisherman's Cove in Eastern Passage at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Space is limited to 27 people per departure and tickets can be bought online.
