Macdonald Bridge sidewalk work begins

Work on the Macdonald Bridge sidewalk begins today.

On its website, Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) says the $1.2 million project will see the lane rehabilitated and resurfaced.

Engineer Daniel Yanez Sanchez says the current surface was installed in the late 1990s.

“We have done patching, but now the patches are failing,” he said. “It's time to rehabilitate the sidewalk before it becomes dangerous.”

From now until July 14, the sidewalk will closed from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. as crews remove worn material and prepare the surface for a new coating.

Pedestrians will still be able to walk across the bridge during that time period, but will need to use the bike lane.

“As a safety precaution, cyclists are asked to dismount their bicycles and walk across the bridge,” HHB says. “If that isn't possible, cyclists are urged to use caution and yield to pedestrians.”

The sidewalk will be open during the day, but workers will be on site scrapping the surface.

The project will then require the sidewalk to be closed for a full weekend. It will shut down on Friday, July 15, reopening on Monday, July 18, but the bike lane will remain open for cyclists and pedestrians.

The work is weather dependent, so some changes to the timeline may be required.

HHB will also be shutting down one lane in each direction of the MacKay Tuesday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. for “urgent repairs.”
