Process to remove statue of Edward Cornwallis begins

Municipal crews arrived at a south end park late Wednesday morning to start the process of removing the statue of Edward Cornwallis.

On Tuesday, Halifax regional council voted 12-4 in favour of taking down the statue and putting it in storage until its long-term future can be decided.

Halifax Regional Municipality spokesperson Brendan Elliott said crews are in site doing prep work with goal of having it taken down as soon as possible.

“It's hard to say specifically when the statue will actually be removed,” said Elliott. “There is a considerable amount of work that needs to be done in order to stage for the removal.”

Elliott said they're not exactly sure what they'll be dealing with until they start the process.

“It's a bit of a mystery as to what material is keeping the Cornwallis statue to the pedestal, so we have to figure out what is going to be required to remove the statue.”

He expects it to be a two step process, with the statue coming down first, followed by the pedestal.
