The Saskatchewan flag is flying at half mast Monday over Halifax's Grand Parade in tribute to 15 people who lost their lives.
A bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team on their to a playoff game collided semi-truck in northeastern Saskatchewan Friday.
Halifax mayor Mike Savage calls it a uniquely Canadian tragedy.
“It's going to sting for a long time … lots of teams across the world take buses, but that hockey bus trip is almost a right of passage for boys and girls in this country,” he said.
Savage is the father of two and said, while growing up, his now 21 and 18-year-old excitedly boarded many buses to head off to games and tournaments.
“Some of the great memories the kids have are of travelling with teammates on buses, so when this happens, it shatters everything we know about those bus trips,” he said.
Savage said the municipality is looking at what else can be done to honour the victims.
Monday night, Halifax City Hall will be lit up with green and gold lights, the team colours of the Humboldt Broncos.
