Winter weather is on the way to Halifax.
A special weather statement remains in effect for our area.
Environment Canada meteorologist Ian Hubbard said around 10 mm of rain and showers will fall before switching over to snow very early Friday morning.
“We're expecting that to happen in the Halifax area around 4 a.m.,” Hubbard said. “From there, that snow is going to continue on until noon or maybe early afternoon on Friday.”
As of Thursday morning, the forecast is calling for between 10 and 15 cm, which is just shy of the criteria to trigger a snowfall warning.
“But if we see those amounts start to creep up then we'll have to look at issuing a warning down the road,” he explained.
Snowfall warnings have already been issued for Guysborough and Richmond counties, along with Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
Hubbard said to expect a windy Friday morning with gusts up to 50 km/h, which means both blowing snow and windchill could be an issue.
“We are going to see the temperatures in the overnight hours range from about -3 at the coast to about -7 further inland,” he added.
“As we move forward into the day on Friday, those temperatures are going to continue to fall a little bit, and with those winds, we will see the windchill values be around -17 in the afternoon.”
Once this passes us by, conditions improve with sun and warm temperatures in the weekend forecast.
As for whether or not this is the last time Haligonians will have to shovel our driveways this season, Hubbard said there are no major systems on the horizon, but cautioned it's not unusual to see snowfalls in late March and into early April.
