Some Dalhousie University students are getting an early start to the long weekend courtesy of a power outage in the south end.

According to Nova Scotia Power's outage map, the electricity went out for over 4,400 customers at around 1:15 p.m.

The cause is still under investigation.

Dalhousie says it's affecting its Studley and Carleton campuses.

“Classes scheduled to take place on Studley and Carleton campuses will be cancelled for the remainder of the day (Friday, October 7),” said a post on Dal's website.

“Individuals in buildings without power are asked to safely exit using available emergency lighting. On-campus staff are encouraged to check with their supervisor for instructions.”

Anyone leaving for the weekend is asked to make sure nothing dangerous — like electrical equipment — has been left on.

“We will provide an update later this afternoon on the status of campus for evening activities (Dalplex, Libraries, etc.), provided power can be restored,” Dalhousie added.

If you're driving in the area and encounter any traffic lights that aren't working, those need to be treated as all-way stops.
