Spring Garden Road to reopen to traffic late Thursday afternoon

By Chris Stoodley

After months of being torn up and inaccessible to most traffic, Spring Garden Road is set to reopen late Thursday afternoon.

The Halifax Regional Municipality says the downtown Halifax roadway, between Queen and South Park Streets, will completely reopen to vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Dec. 23 at 5 p.m.

Moreover, Halifax Transit buses will come off detour routes at the start of the service day on Friday, Dec. 24.

“A reminder that all parking and loading spaces on Spring Garden Road have been removed, and no stopping along the corridor will be enforced,” a municipal news release says. “Accessible on-street parking is available on side streets.”

While traffic will be welcomed back to Spring Garden Road, there will still be work underway.

In early January, businesses will be connected to a new underground utilities system.

“Finishing work, such as installation of benches, may take place in January, or in the spring with the installation of trees and planting,” the news release says.

Starting June 1, 2022,  Spring Garden Road — between Queen and South Park Streets — will be bus-only every day between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m.

According to the municipality's website, construction on Spring Garden Road was supposed to start on June 7 and end on Nov. 30.

The construction was part of the Imagine Spring Garden Road or Spring Garden Road Streetscape Project.

The municipality says it's a project that aims to “beautify the street” and “improve conditions” for people travelling on the road.
