Storm closures and cancellations: January 7, 2022

A snowfall warning has been issued in the metro Halifax area. Here's how the weather is impacting us today.

SCHOOLS: 

Public schools in Nova Scotia are still on an extended holiday break, but the Halifax Regional Centre for Education says schools will be closed to all staff and students Friday as many have been using learning centres this week.

All NSCAD campuses are closed on Friday.

NSCC's metro campuses (Ivany, Aviation, IT and Akerley) closed early

Mount Saint Vincent University closed early.

Dalhousie University and University of King's College are closed Friday afternoon, courses suspended.

TRANSPORTATION:

The Halifax Regional Municipality will be enforcing the winter parking ban overnight. It will be in effect in both zones (Zone 1 – Central and Zone 2 – Non-Central) between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8. “Given current public health directives, residents are reminded that even if isolating, they are responsible to make arrangements to move their vehicle off municipal streets in advance of the storm,” said HRM in a news release Thursday.

Halifax Transit's conventional bus service and ferry service continues to experience service disruptions.

Many bus routes are on snow plan.

There are several power outages throughout the Halifax area, if you encounter an intersection with lights not working, treat that intersection as an all-way stop.

As of 3:35 p.m., police are asking drivers to avoid the intersection of Larry Uteck Boulevard and Hammonds Plains Road due to the traffic lights not working and deteriorating road conditions.

Halifax Stanfield International Airport is reminding passengers to check the status of their flight with the airline and to plan for extra time to get to the airport.

SERVICES:

Curbside collection of Christmas trees, recycling and garbage will continue as scheduled, but green cart collection will be cancelled Friday in Halifax, Sackville, Fall River, Waverley, Cole Harbour, Westphal and Cherry Brook. Green cart collection services in these areas will be provided on Friday, Jan. 21.

211 Nova Scotia is experiencing difficulties related to the power outages.

The U.S. consulate will close at 4:00p.m. U.S. citizens with emergencies call 902-429-2480.

RECREATION:

Many HRM recreation facilities have closed early for the day.

All branches of Halifax Public Libraries closed early.

The Museum of Natural History closed early.

Art Gallery of Nova Scotia closed early.

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic closed early.

The Discovery Centre closed early.

All branches of Halifax Public Libraries closed early.

The Halifax Public Gardens will be closed Saturday morning.

HEALTH CARE:

The Bayers Lake COVID-19 testing centre is closed due to the weather.

The Dartmouth Crossing COVID-19 testing centre has lost power due and had to close.

Bayers Road Blood Collection site (7071 Bayers Road) is closed for the day/evening due to lack of power.

The vaccine outreach clinic scheduled at Mount Saint Vincent University today closed early due to weather.

BUSINESSES:

The night shift at the Halifax Shipyard is cancelled. The start of the day shift tomorrow – Saturday, January 8 – is delayed to 9:30 a.m.

The Halifax Shopping Centre has closed early due to a power outage.

Some businesses may decide to close early or not open at all today.

Some businesses that planned to stay open may be forced to close due to power outages.
