Sunday service to honour fallen peace officers

A service will be held Sunday to honour peace officers who have died in the line of duty.

“The ceremony is an incredibly important event as it helps to bring people together to honour the service and ultimate sacrifice of Nova Scotia peace officers who died while in the line of duty,” said Halifax Regional Police Chief Dan Kinsella, who is also the chair of the Nova Scotia Fallen Peace Officers’ Memorial Service Organizing Committee.

“It is also a sombre reminder of the exceptional role that police officers have in our community and the dangers that they face, day in and day out.”

The event will begin with a procession involving peace officers, first responders, civilian employees, military personnel and volunteers.

The group will leave police headquarters at 12:45 p.m. heading south on Gottingen Street. They will then make a right onto Brunswick, a left on Carmichael, then turn right onto Argyle before entering Grand Parade, where the 39th annual memorial service will start at 1 p.m.

“Participants from across the province will then assemble at the Nova Scotia Fallen Peace Officers’ Monument for a brief ceremony where dignitaries will bring remarks and will lay wreaths along with peace officers and family members in memory of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice,” a news release from Halifax Regional Police said.

Those planning to attend in-person are asked to bring proof of vaccination (unless exempt or not eligible) and wear a mask.

The service will also be live-streamed on the Halifax Regional Police's Facebook page.

HRP officers will be on hand to direct traffic Sunday, but drivers may want to try and avoid the area between 11:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
