What’s open and what’s closed Labour Day weekend

Here's a look at what will be open and closed on the Labour Day weekend:

BUSINESSES

Labour Day is a designated retail closing day in Nova Scotia, which means you can expect most stores and businesses to be shut down on Monday. This includes grocery stores, NSLCs and malls.

Some pharmacies will be open, however, they may have reduced hours of operation Monday.

Expect banks to be closed Monday, some may also be closed on Sunday.

Several other businesses may be closed or have reduced operating hours on Monday, it's best to call ahead or check websites/social media feeds of specific businesses for more information.
 
TRANSPORTATION

Halifax Transit buses will be operating on holiday schedules Monday. 

The Alderney Ferry will run at half-hour frequency on Monday, with the first crossing departing the Alderney terminal at 7:30 a.m. and the final crossing departing the Halifax terminal at 11:45 p.m. 

There will be no Woodside ferry service on Monday.

On-street parking will be free on Labour Day.

RECREATION

The Emera Oval will be open on Monday. Weather permitting, equipment lending will operate from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Many other municipal recreation facilities will be closed Monday. Residents are asked to call ahead.

Lifeguard service has ended for the year at HRM's beaches, except for Kearney Lake Beach, Chocolate Lake Beach and Penhorn Lake Beach. Those three beaches will be supervised from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Work on the Centennial Pool is ongoing, and the pool is expected to reopen in October.

SERVICES

All services at Halifax Public Libraries branches, including Curbside Pick-up, will be closed for the Labour Day holiday.

Canada Post will not be collecting or delivering mail on Monday.

There will be no solid waste collection on Monday. If that's your day, you're asked to put your garbage, organics or recyclables out on Saturday, Sept. 3.

The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, the Halifax recycling facility and municipal composting facilities will be closed on Monday.

The Household Special Waste Depot at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive will be closed on Saturday, but a mobile Household Special Waste event will be held on Saturday at Cole Harbour Place.

The 311 Contact Centre will be operating on regular hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday.

Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Monday.
