After the U.S. launched new airstrikes on Iran this week, the price of gas and diesel in Nova Scotia took huge leaps.
According to the Nova Scotia Energy Board, the price of regular self-serve gasoline is 183.1 cents per litre, a jump of 6.4 cents from the week previous.
Diesel is set to take a larger chunk out of people’s wallets, as the price went up by 9.1 cents from 194.9 to 204.0 cents. Last week, both gas and diesel increased dramatically amid the turmoil in the Middle East.
This time last year, Nova Scotians were paying 145.9 for gas and 160.4 for diesel.
What happened to a ceasefire?
The United States launched new airstrikes against Iran early Thursday, and Iran responded by hitting Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar in crossfire that again threatened an interim deal intended to help end the war in the Persian Gulf.
The strikes came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said recent Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz signalled the end of the fragile ceasefire. The U.S. struck a variety of military sites and port facilities early Wednesday following Iran’s targeting of several merchant vessels off the coast of Oman, sparking Iranian fire then as well.
But Thursday’s attacks appeared bigger all around.
Military officials said in a social media post that the latest strikes were intended to “further degrade” Iran’s ability “to threaten freedom of navigation” in the strait, through which a fifth of the world’s traded oil and natural gas passed before the war began with U.S. and Israeli attacks on Feb. 28.
