Winter storm wallops Halifax area with snow, strong winds (update)

Haligonians woke up to a blanket of snow on Monday morning.

A storm passing off the coast brought snow and powerful winds to the province, prompting weather warnings across Nova Scotia.

Environment Canada's winter storm warning for the metro Halifax area has ended as of 10:15 a.m. Monday.

Meteorologist Bob Robichaud says a number of spots in the province have received over 40 cm of snow from this “classic winter storm.”

“There's some varying totals across Halifax, but the airport now has reported about 45 cm,” he said. “And just around 30 or so in the Hammonds Plains to Dartmouth area, in that stretch.”

Robichaud expects some snow to continue on and off, with conditions improving by midday.

“Winds are still going to be a little bit gusty, but not too strong,” he added.

The storm forced schools to close, and prompted delays to begin the work week

The municipality asked residents to stay off the roads where possible to allow for snow clearing crews to work. Transit won't resume until at least noon, and the parking ban will continue to be enforced overnight into Tuesday.
