RCMP warn of recent phone scams

By Meghan Groff

RCMP say don't send money, gift cards, Bitcoin or anything else of value to someone you've never met in person.

This after recent reports of phone scams in the province.

Mounties say in one of them, the scammer claims to be from your bank and tells you someone has made fraudulent charges on your account.

Some victims were convinced to go to various stores to buy pre-paid gift cards.

“Scammers can be very persistent and convincing,” police say in a news release. “Being defrauded is never the victim's fault.”

“If you have been defrauded, you are not alone. Please report it to your local police.”

Scams can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online.
