Rock-bottom lobster prices may ground fishermen

Lobster fishermen may be facing another season of poor prices.

Fisheries Minister Sterling Belliveau says estimates show the price for lobster is hovering between $3.50 and $4 a pound.

He says the province is looking into new ways to sell the tasty crustacean.

“My personal belief is that we have been marketing lobsters the way our grandfathers have marketed,” he said. “Put them on the back of a truck and deliver them to a Boston-New York market. We need to change that.”

Belliveau says 175 lobster fishermen have applied for permits to sell their catches from their trucks in parking lots around the urban core, while some in Meteghan are “holding” their catches to help drive up demand.

Similar prices last year were almost a disaster for the lobster industry.
