High-speed internet won’t cover province until 2010

A plan to bring high speed internet to all Nova Scotians has stalled.
Service providers had promised to make a high speed connection available to every person in the province by January 1st
Now, the target date has been pushed to May 2010.
The deputy minister of economic and rural development says cable companies have had trouble accessing transmission towers.
Ian Thompson told a legislative committee yesterday that two of the three companies involved are not on target – and could face penalties of up to two-million dollars for failing to meet the deadline.
Thompson wouldn’t say how much more the 34-million dollar project could cost because of the delays.
Currently, about six per cent of Nova Scotians are still limited to dial-up connections.
