Sports facilities to get upgrades

Recreational facilities in metro are getting a $2 million boost this morning.

The federal government and the city will contribute a combined $2.1 million on upgrades for the Wanderer’s Grounds fieldhouse, the Bedford Lions’ pool and 20 basketball, tennis and outdoor hockey courts throughout HRM.

Defence Minister Peter Mackay announced today that the federal government’s recreation and infrastructure program will contribute $710,000 to sports facilities.

MacKay says that theses facilities are for the benefit of all.

“I think this is one of the most important investments that we can make as a country , as a people, as a province,” says MacKay.

“And this rink program is ideal to provide those venues, those facilities, that place where people can come together.”

Mayor Peter Kelly says the city’s $1.1 million investment will assist with the improvements.

Kelly says that the city is already looking at future facilities projects and hopes more federal funding is on the way to the province.
