Councillor asks city staff to draft a backyard chicken by-law

Metro residents might one day be permitted to have chickens in their backyards.
City councillor Jennifer Watts says the peninsula community council is asking city staff to look at developing a by-law to allow chickens on the peninsula.
“What will happen is staff will do further research into what practices other municipalities are using in many cities across North America,” says Watts.
“Come back with a proposal there then would be an opportunity for the public to comment on that, then at a later date, community council would decide whether to implement the by-law or not.”
She says she expects a by-law would place limits on the number of chickens and prohibit roosters. Several cities in Canada and the U.S. already allow chickens as part of a movement toward urban agriculture.
Watts says the staff report should be ready by Spring.
