Halifax police happy with performance

Halifax Regional Police says it’s satisfied with a new Statistics Canada report, which puts it just below the national average in clearing crimes.
Meanwhile, Codiac RCMP in Moncton rank number one in Canada. The clearance rating looks at the number of charges laid, for the number of crimes.
Sara Beattie with Stats Can says more serious crimes are given a higher weight.
“Homicide, or robbery, or break and enter would receive a higher weight, than declarence of less serious crimes,” she said.
The report shows Codiac RCMP tops in Canada for populations above 100,000, with a rating of 46. Canada’s average is 37.6, while Halifax comes in at 37.2.
Halifax Regional Police Constable Brian Palmeter says he’s satisfied with the number.
“Compared to other cities of the same size we feel we’re very much on par.” he said. “We will continue to strive to improve those numbers.”
Halifax police, and HRM RCMP dealt with nearly 31,000 crimes and violations last year, 36.8 percent of which were cleared.
Codiac RCMP cleared 52 percent of its 7600 violations.
