Heritage building spared by relocation

One of Halifax’s oldest buildings has moved from Hollis to Morris Street.
On Monday night, the Charles Morris Building, built in 1760, was lifted and moved to a parking lot on Morris Street owned by Nova Scotia Power.
It was destined for a landfill after a developer bought the land and planned to build on the site.
The building was named after Charles Morris, who served as the province’s first chief surveyor and laid out the original streets and property lines for the city of Halifax.
The Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia and other organizations stepped in to save the building with the help of four HRM councillors who funded the move.
The building will stay on Morris Street until the Heritage Trust can decide on a permanent location.
