Firefighters battle major structure fire in south end rowhouse

Dozens of firefighters are battling a fire that is ripping through the top two floors of a south end townhouse.
The fire broke out in the Victorian brick rowhouse on South Street around 8 a.m. and is still not completely contained.
At least two businesses are expected to sustain smoke and water damage, but it’s believed everyone was able to evacuate the building safely and there are no reports of injuries.
Nova Scotia Power has cut electricity to part of the south end because of the fire. Electricity was initially cut to 6,000 customers at 9 a.m. but the number was reduced about 20 minutes later to 2,600 when Nova Scotia Power switched customers to other distribution lines.
Power is expected to be restored by 11:30.
