Halifax property values up 6.5 per cent

Property assessments are being mailed to homeowners today, and the values are up 6.5 per cent from last year.

However the increase is not as steep as usual — in years past there has been double digit increases.

“We typically follow the housing market and what we’ve seen is market value continue to increase, albeit at a slower rate,” says Vice President of Operations Lloyd MacLellan.

Commercial property values also had a small single-digit increase, rising 4.7 per cent.

Maclellan says he expects values to go up more next year.

“We’re starting to see the market value to creep back up again,” says MacLellan.

Roughly 2 per cent of owners appeal their assessments, with 40-45 per cent of them getting new values.

The appeal form can be found on the front of your assessment.
