No more resignations needed over MLA expenses: Dexter

Following the departure of Yarmouth MLA Richard Hurlburt, Premier Darrell Dexter says he doesn’t believe there should be more fallout from the spending scandal.
Dexter says there’s no need for all MLAs named in the report to resign.
“It is simply a case where what we need to do is restore, through a process I have set out, the new management structure for expenses to make sure we have a system that works,” he said.
Cape Breton University political scientist Tom Urbaniak says there will be public pressure on government to do more.
“[They need] to show that this is still being investigated in some kind of independent manner,” said Urbaniak.
Urbaniak says Dexter would have known about the auditor general’s findings, and could have implemented expense reform ahead of the report.
“That didn’t happen,” he said. “For that reason the premier is now struggling to play catch up, and somewhat awkwardly doing damage control.”
Urbaniak adds there’s still the possibility of an inquiry, or further resignations.
