Nova Scotia’s auditor general says the free ride for MLAs is over.
Before Jacques Lapointe audited MLA expenditures submitted to the Speaker’s Office this year, it hadn’t been done for 15 years.
The auditor general releases two reports every year and Lapointe tells Metro Halifax the Speaker’s Office just never came up – because other priorities would have been more pressing at the time.
He says he doesn’t think the Speaker’s Office will be overlooked for so long ever again.
So far one MLA has resigned in the wake of Lapointe’s report while several others have reimbursed taxpayers for questionable purchases.
Lapointe is now conducting a forensic audit to determine whether any of the MLA claims broke laws.
