Speaker puts the bill in the mail for MLAs

Most of Nova Scotia’s MLAs will get letters from the Speaker’s Office this week, asking them to return taxpayer dollars that weren’t spent appropriately.
The CBC reports that 28 elected representatives will be asked to repay claims that were submitted twice. Eight MLAs will be asked to pay back spending on personal items or in cases where they did business with family members.
Speaker Charlie Parker says he’s trusting in MLAs’ good judgement to return the money – and will seek legal advice if they refuse.
Several past and present MLAs have already repaid some expenses following an auditor general’s report that exposed questionable spending practices. The auditor general has now launched a forensic audit to examine further irregularities in spending.
