Burning cross shocks Hants County couple

A Hants County couple found a seven-foot burning cross on their lawn around 1 a.m. Sunday, in what RCMP are investigating as a hate crime.

“It was a very very big cross,” says Michelle, who lives in the home but preferred not to give her last name. “It was a seven foot cross at least, very wide in stature, made with very wide boards. It was very very noticeable.”

The people who put it there then hurled racial obscenities at the couple and took off.

Michelle, a Caucasian, lives in the home with her African-Canadian fiance, Shane Howe.

“Grow up,” says Michelle. “Not everybody thinks that way, we’re all the same. And how dare you? This was a family. We’re a family,”

RCMP Sgt. Brigdit Legere says police are investigating the issue as a hate crime. They’re asking anyone who may know something to call them or Crime Stoppers.
