United Way charity posts record donation tally

The United Way had a packed house for Thursday’s announcement that it raised more than $6 million through this year’s workplace campaign.

“It’s a phenomenal feeling of accomplishment,” says United Way campaign co-chair Jamie Baillie.

He says they’ve never raised so much money in one year, and says it’s an especially impressive achievement considering a year of international disasters and a crippling recession.

“Both the government and the business community stepped up when we asked them to and exceeded the target by 21,000 extra dollars,” says Baillie.

The money funds a variety of things like programs and services for children, women escaping violence, and people with mental health issues.

One of the incoming co-chairs says they’re hoping to build on this year’s record total.
