Bridge toll increase faces criticism

Halifax Regional Council is pushing for a 25 cent toll hike on the harbour bridges, with a cut from the increase to go toward transit costs.
The Bridge Commission has a problem with that.
“My thought is that it’s unfair to target just the bridge users for that type of transit tax when there are a lot of other people driving onto and off of the peninsula,” says Steve Snider, the Commission’s GM and CEO.
Regional council is asking that 15 cents of the 25 cent increase go to transportation initiatives. The other 10 cents would stay with the bridge commission.
Snider points out other cities have cordoned tolling that charges people who come into a central business district.
He says he figures the city is eying them because they already have a ready toll collection system in place.
