Carving the powder

Athletes are taking to the slopes today for day two of the Snowboardcross North American Cup Competition. Events got underway March 5 at Martock Ski Hill.
About 50 national and international athletes are expected to carve the powder bringing with them trainers, volunteers and spectators. Qualifications begin at 10:30 a.m. with final races scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
“We are very proud to be offering two snowboardcross events with men’s, women’s and adaptive categories, as well as, an adaptive athlete development camp over the two days,” said Steve Fairbairn, the planning committee chair in a press release Feb. 26. “It’s going to be an exciting event.”
It’s the first time the event is being held in Canada, east of Quebec. the competition is the official test event for the 2011 Halifax Canada Winter Games.
The event will allow the 50 competing athletes to accumulate FIA points before the World Cup events.
