Rush-hour racers crash on busy street

Halifax’s deputy mayor is urging drivers to slow down on a stretch of road that’s been a favourite for street racers.
During Friday morning’s rush-hour, police say a Hyundai and Mazda sped off from an intersection on Sackville Drive.
“The driver of the black Hyundai lost control, rolled his vehichle,” says Cpl. Joe Taplin with Halifax RCMP. “He was transported to the Cobequid Health Centre by EHS with non-life threating injuries.”
A 37-metre skid mark is indicative of the speed involved.
Car racing on Sackville Drive has long been an issue. A teen was killed as two cars raced along road in 2004.
There is no word on charges yet against either driver, however Deputy Mayor Brad Johns wants the book thrown at them.
“I’d rather be twice as hard then go easy,” says Johns. “At least then they’d think twice.”
He urges people to slow down, pointing out it’s a busy street for both pedestrians and vehicles. And says racing puts lives at risk.
