Downtown could get more one-way streets

The city is looking at changing some one-way streets in downtown Halifax.
Dave McCusker, the manager of traffic planning for the city, says up to eight streets may see a change, including Lower Water Street and Sackville Street.
“Those are both streets that are one way a portion of their length and two-way the rest,” says McCusker. “We would make them one way streets their entire legnth.”
Lower Water Street would then couple with Hollis, which is a one way street. Sackville Street would pair up with Prince, with traffic on Sackville going down to the waterfront and traffic on Prince going up the hill.
Market and Grafton Streets would also be made one way their entire lengths.
Downtown Councillor Dawn Sloane says more one ways might appease those who want on-street parking and bike lanes.
“And the only way to achieve it in a grid pattern like we have in the downtown is to look at to turning some streets into one-way streets,” says Sloane.
There’s a meeting early next month to get reaction from affected businesses. McCusker says if they like the idea, the changes could be made by fall.
