Concerts on the Common will continue

The Halifax Commons will play host to more music acts – including a major headliner rumoured to be coming this summer.

A proposed ban on Commons concerts was defeated, almost unanimously, at regional council Tuesday night.

In fact, Mayor Peter Kelly said councillors took a step to make the greenspace even more concert-friendly, approving millions in infrastructure for the site.

Kelly hinted at major news of a new show, with details coming soon.

“There will be a concert announced next week for another two-day concert to be announced next Tuesday,” he said.

The CBC reports one of the acts confirmed for that show is the Black Eyed Peas, the urban group behind the hits “Let’s Get it Started,” and “I Got a Feeling.”

A country show is already scheduled for the Commons in August and promoters are hoping to land more performers.

Coun. Jennifer Watts (District 14, Connaught-Quinpool) had floated the idea of banning shows on the Common, saying concerts should move to the Garrison Grounds. She and Dawn Sloane (District 12, Halifax Downtown) voted in favour of the motion, with Sloane saying the space should be reserved for local artists.
