The pothole season that wasn’t?

There are some around, but there seem to be a lot fewer potholes this spring. The winter’s fairly steady weather is getting most of the credit.
“This year we didn’t have near the amount of freeze-thaws,” said Gordon Hayward, HRM Winter Works Superintendent.
This is the the first time HRM used a new asphalt recycling machine. It takes old asphalt and sort of cooks it.
“When our day crews leave at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, they can load this thing up…like a slow-cooker or a breadmaker,” Hayward explained. “Then our night crews come in at 11 o’clock, they’ve got 2 tons of hot asphalt.”
The asphalt cooker is used instead trying to fill holes with cold patches — which never last very long.
The current trailer is in Dartmouth, but HRM hopes to have one in each maintenance depot in the urban core.
