Spike placed on popular trail

ATV drivers are having more problems on a popular trail in Boutilier’s Point.
An ATV driver was going down the St. Margarets Rails to Trails community trail Sunday afternoon and got a flat tire. Someone had put a plate in the ground with a long nail sticking up.
The trail has been the focus of a controversy between area residents and ATV users.
Barry Barnet with the ATV Association of Nova Scotia says they’re not impressed.
“The last four years we’ve had incidents like this that have jeopardized the health and safety of riders, walkers, horses and others that might use that trail,” says Barnet. “That’s just not appropriate.”
Bob Haagensen, who lives in the area and is against ATV use on the trail, doesn’t condone what happened, but says he understands.
“People here are getting so upset and frustrated with the lack of support from the government that they’re just taking matters into their own hands,” says Haagensen. “So as far as I’m concerned, putting a spike on the trail is just a kind of self-defense.”
Haagensen says a group from the area is hoping to meet with the Natural Resources minister soon to once again discuss ATV use. He says if nothing is done, they will look at legal action.
