Police union spurns cost-cutting exercise over policing decision

The union representing Halifax Regional Police officers won’t help the mayor with his fact finding mission to cut city costs.
Municipal Association of Police Personnel president Dave Moore says it’s because city leaders were wasteful with taxpayers’ money last month when they turned down a recomendation to oust the RCMP from the region.
Moore says the city could have saved $2.8 million a year by accepting the recommendation to have one police force in HRM rather than two.
He adds council acted with total disregard for fiscal responsibility and made a decision based on emotion rather than fact.
Coun. Russell Walker, who chairs the city’s police commission tells the Herald, despite that decision last month, the police services issue still isn’t resolved.
The city is facing a $30 million deficit.
