Province working to snare coyotes without harming pets

The hunt for coyotes is gearing up in Nova Scotia, and the province has a plan to protect Fi-Fi and Fido from getting snared.

Hope for Wildlife Director, Hope Swinimer says she’s not comfortable with the coyote bounty because family pets will end up in the traps.

“There’s no mercy I think, in a lot of cases. You’re never quite sure what’s going to end up in that live trap,” she said. “I think those are all things we have to be concerned about.”

Natural Resources Minister John MacDonnell says it’s a concern the province is trying to mitigate.

“We’re looking at what the possibilities are in more urban, more developed areas,” he said. “[We’re looking for] a trap or snare that will hold an animal but won’t be lethal.”

MacDonnell says the province wants trappers to check snares two to three times a day.
