Fisherman drowns on sinking boat

A tragic accident Saturday on what was the first day of the lobster fishing season.

A Cape Breton fisherman has died after the 14-metre Magna Marine fishing vessel he was on sank three kilometres off the coast of Cheticamp.

RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Brigdit Legere says the boat capsized 20-minutes after it started taking on water.

“Other fishing boats in the immediate area offered assistance to this sinking vessel,” Legere said. “One man was transported to Inverness Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.”

Three others were on board, two were taken to hospital, treated and released the other spent the afternoon in hospital in stable condition.

Police are investigating the incident to determine what caused the boat to sink.
